De-stress the Holidays!

Let’s leave the topic of kids for a little while, shall we?  They’re having a great time with all their new loot while you’re cleaning, cooking, hosting, baking, wrapping, etc. The holidays can be so stressful, it’s easy to forget how much we loved them when we were kids. How can you get the holiday spirit back? Here are a few of our ideas for making the holidays a little less stressful.

  1. Sneak out and head to a movie that doesn’t involve any chipmunks. We’ve heard War Horse is amazing, or go vintage Le Carré with Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
  2. When was the last time you bought a present for yourself? Give yourself a budget and go online or to the mall and find something fun for yourself.  We know there’s something you’ve been coveting. Now is the time to treat yourself.
  3. Send the kids out with your fellow parent and read a magazine from cover to cover (without hiding in the bathroom to do it).
  4. Join in the fun. Did the kids get a new game or toboggan for Christmas? Leave the chores aside for an hour and play with them.

And for when all else fails, a little winter sangria will do the trick.

Winter Fruit Sangria

Ingredients

1 cup brandy

1/2 cup sugar

1 orange, ends cut off, thinly sliced

1 apple, halved and thinly sliced

2 bottles well-chilled dry red wine, such as Rioja or red Zinfandel

1 cup club soda

3/4 cup fresh orange juice

Directions:  In a large pitcher, stir together brandy, sugar, and orange and apple slices. Let stand 15 minutes. Add wine, club soda, and orange juice. Serve over ice.
